JAKARTA – Apple is rumored to be starting production of the iPhone 12 in India by collaborating with its partner, Wistron. This can be seen when the company is recruiting employees in that country.
Quoted from NDTV Gadgets, Thursday, August 20, Wistron will likely employ 10,000 employees to work at the Narasapura factory in Bengaluru. Nearly 1000 employees are currently said to be working on the iPhone 12 and production will begin in October.
This new iPhone model looks set to be shipped in mid-2021. It looks like the phone is aimed at the Indian market and local production will serve as a means for Apple to cut customs fees or taxes that could be as high as 22 percent.
It is known, India is the second largest smartphone market in the world and even though Apple dominates the premium category, its share reaches 1 percent overall. Mainly because of the high price of mobile phones and increasing competition from Chinese companies that offer a wide variety of products that are not a few models.

Apple has been making lower-priced smartphones in India since 2017. Last month Wistron’s rival Foxconn started manufacturing the iPhone 11 at its factories in the country. This is the first time that Apple has produced a model top-of-the-line in India.
After starting iPhone 11 production in India, Apple sees local production of the iPhone 12 and iPhone SE also starting at the end of this year.
According to a report, Pegatron, which is the second largest iPhone builder, is also rumored to be setting up a factory in India. In addition, Apple also plans to open its first flagship store in the country in 2021.
Increasing production in India will also help Apple reduce its reliance on China, where most of its smartphones are currently made. However, it is not yet known whether the iPhone 12 models manufactured in India will also be sold in other countries.
